Unalga Island, Alaska

Ahtna successfully removed 2 above ground storage tanks (AST), 8.18 tons of drums and drum carcasses, 4,054 tons of POL-contaminated soil, 445 gallons of POL-liquid contents from drums and ASTs, 0.55 tons of broken lead acid battery debris and lead-shielded cable, 11.1 tons of lead-contaminated soil, 21.6 tons of cadmium contaminated soil, 0.26 tons of electronics debris, 525 linear feet of pipeline, and 2 generators from Davis Air Force Base Cantonment Area FUDs during the 2019 and 2020 field seasons. Site conditions were poor with road access across the island extremely limited and which could not support wheeled vehicles of any type. However, Ahtna successfully completed the work on time and without issue through careful planning and the use of tracked heavy equipment, helicopters, and crane mats to minimize impacts to roadways and stream crossings. Ahtna successfully completed work during the COVID-19 pandemic through a rigorous safety, testing, and monitoring program including use of a remote camp, and transport and housing vessels.
