Ahtna constructed basic visitor amenities and a park and ride on approximately 5 acres of land located south of the Kuhio Highway. The project included on-grade viewpoint structures, interpretive displays, pedestrian areas and walks, and vault toilet restroom facility. Additional project elements include a parking lot for approximately 25 vehicles, site access from Kuhio Highway, and redesign of the existing overlook site to reflect a right-in, right-out configuration.

For the restroom facility, Ahtna excavated, per design the vault placement sites to subgrade. Engineered gravel fill was placed & compacted per manufacturer’s recommendations to maintain desired drainage within self-contained vault units. Each individual precast concrete vault was then placed in the excavation via crane. The vaults were lined with butyl tape & the two-stall facility was then securely placed on the vaults creating a liquid tight seal. Vaults were backfilled & compacted to finish grade. Additionally, Ahtna also poured in place a concrete sidewalk around the building for pedestrian access for the parking lot.
